Welcome to the journal of love and hope for Valerie Lopez-Robinson. This website chronicles Valerie's journey in healing.

Valerie was diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme. Her Mom, Bernice, explains how this diagnosis was reached below:

Valerie was having headaches that started as one a day. We thought they were stress induced or part of her shoulder problem that she was getting therapy for. The headaches started to get worse and was thought by her pediatrician to be sinus's and she was started on a sinus medication. She advised to try that for one week and if that did not work we would get a CT done. Fri. 01-27-06 was the end of the week and her headaches were not being prevented by the sinus medication, in fact, they were getting worse. They were lasting all day with no relief. We tried to get through the weekend to go back to her Dr. However she started vomiting and having pain in her neck. It then sounded like meningitis, so I took her to Childrens Hospital on Sun. 01-29-06. When we got to the ER she was thought to have migraines by the triage nurse and we waited for 2 1/2 hours in the waiting room. Then she got a CT done in the ER and it was clear, so they did a spinal tap that revealed that she had too much spinal fluid in her head that was causing her headaches. They said sometimes this happens, so they removed the extra fluid and thought this would take her headaches away and she would be fine. When her headaches did not go away they admitted her to the neuro floor of Childrens. For the next few days they were running all kinds of tests, trying to find out what was the cause of the spinal fluid building up. Every day they were ruling out all kinds of stuff and as time went by we were facing more and more serious problems. Her MRI's showed some abnormal areas in the brain and spine, she under went a biopsy of one of the spots in the lower spine on Fri. 02-03-06. This told us right away it was cancer, however they could not tell us what type of cancer it was. They said it would take a few days for the final diagnosis. During this time Valerie was given pain medication and a drainage tube for the spinal fluid along with some other medications for infection, diuretic (water pill) and steroids for inflammation. We got her final diagnosis on 02-07-06 The drainage tube was taken out and she was discharged from the hospital on 02-08-06
Valerie is feeling much better now, she does not have any headache's. She has been going back to school. She will start chemo and radiation next week and then will be home schooled. Her spirits are very high and she said she is going to fight this!! So let us all pray she win's her battle.
Thank you to everyone for the love and support and most of all their prayers. Bernice

8-17-06 Update

Hello,

Well we went to Children's today. The tumors have grown, and are now all connected up the spine. They are about 2 inches away from the danger area. The area that will effect her breathing. She is having a lot of pain in her shoulders now along with the weakness. They told Valerie that their was no sense in continuing the IV chemo because it was going to make her sick and she has not had any signs of the tumor grow being slowed down. They gave her the option again to do nothing but treat her pain and symptoms OR to try another chemo pill form that would not make her as sick as the other would have if she had keep taking it. Another chemo that has worked for some with this type of cancer. She chose not to give up, so we are going to start the new chemo as soon as Walgreens get it in. We also increased the dose of her pain meds to help her. We also are going to start her on any anti-depressant medication. I know you must all be saying that will not take away the depression she has every right to feel. YES that is very true, however she has shut down to others and does not want to do things to have some enjoyment or go out of the house for much of anything. So this medication will be a helper. Kinda like a ladder in the deep end of the pool, you need it to get out but if the pool is empty you can not reach the ladder. So the medication will be the water way to the ladder. So I am hoping the medication will give her a boost, so she may have better quality of life.

As you all know if you have ever been or know someone who has been very ill, you see many different doctors. Some are like good cop/bad cop. Meaning some give you the glass is half empty response and some give you the glass is half full. Well anyway Valerie's two main doctors are that way, both great but their outlooks differ a bit. Valerie asked them both separately how much time they though she had before losing her arm function and breathing issues to begin. One told her any time now for the loss of her arm function and not far after the breathing problems. The other said I don't thing it is going to be like next week. He felt a month or two. So I guess we need to ask God for the answer to that one.

Valerie will not be returning to school. Going to school for the day is out of the question. We talked about home school, however Valerie's hands are weak and her hands shake. That makes it hard for her to write. She also can not read for very long before getting a headache. So school at this point is not an option. We would like to give our very best to all the teachers, staff and students at Thomas Stone High School for all their love devotion for Valerie for the past 7 months.

Thanks for your prayers,
Bernice

Dear Jesus,
Give Valerie and her family courage to face the days ahead. I want You to heal her, to touch her body and remove those tumors and every cancerous cell. Put everything back into proper working order so that she may be strong and healthy again. That's what I want and what I ask for. But, God, I recognize that often our ways are not Your ways, and as difficult as it is, please give Valerie and her family courage to accept whatever Your will in this illness is knowing that no matter what, it will end in glory.

Help Valerie not to be afraid. Give her Your perfect peace and assurance that You are right beside her, holding her in the very palms of Your hands and there is nothing to be afraid of. (ISaiah 49:15 -16). Should You take her to be with You before You take her family, then give them all total confidence that they are all held by You, just in different hands. Bless the days she has left, whether many years or just a few, fill them with love, laughter, meaningful relationships, and grace. Take away her pain.

I ask all this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus,
Amen

Valerie,

You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Your strength and courage is an inspiration to me, as well as those who are blessed to know you.
GOD's plan for our lives is not always the same as what we may have envisioned for ourselves, but never forget that GOD loves you and that HE'LL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU!
A lot people may ask how could this happen to such a sweet young lady, but I try never to question the bad, because I then have to question the good - and I would never question as to why GOD has allowed you to touch the lives of so many people in such a positive way!

May GOD bless you always,
Coach Rhonda Milhouse

Valerie, you are such a beautiful, brave young lady who has touched so many people with your strong will to survive.
There is a reading called "Footprints" that talks about when u see only 1 set of footprints in the sand, it is then that Jesus is carrying you. I firmly believe Jesus has u in his arms during this period of your life.
Bernice, u are such a loving mother and I think it is wonderful u have kept this blog updated like u have and been as strong as u have.
I am Rich Greco's Mom from PA and would love to meet u and ur dghtr some day.
God Bless You Both.
